Kiln rings are used in the pottery process to ensure a perfect finishing product every time. Traditionally used to test the temperature of the kiln, these rings are placed onto each kiln before a firing, then measured afterwards. If the heat is consistent, they should shrink at a uniform rate. If not, then the ring will come out asymmetrical. The temperature can then be adjusted.
Kiln rings are essential to the pottery process but have no other use once they've been fired. To reduce our waste, we've discovered a way to reuse our kiln rings and transform them into ceramic Christmas tree decorations.
Each of these pieces has been hand decorated in our newest Burleigh pattern. The bottle green floral design has been printed onto each decoration using a centuries-old tissue transfer method. We've used off-cut tissue that would otherwise be discarded to achieve this, to further reduce our carbon footprint.
